This was a disaster, Ally thought to herself. Why had Caleb decided that the right place to be honest about his feelings for once was in the middle of a lake, where the universal laws of physics made it impossible for her to run away? At least Caleb was wasting no time getting them back to the shore. He was gunning the boat every bit as fast as he had when he had been showing off to her what his toy could do.

Why had he told her that he had feelings for her? Of course she had suspected it... She hadn’t missed the crazy chemistry of their practice kiss, nor the way that they had woken wrapped around one another this morning. But she had thought that they were both going to ignore it. That was the sensible thing to do, the right thing to do that wouldn’t ruin their friendship. That wouldn’t make her push him away because she was scared of how big her feelings for him might grow. How much they could hurt each other if they allowed that to happen.

What was the point of having a fake boyfriend if you ended up in the same arguments that you would with a real one?

Why couldn’t everything just stay the same? Sure, Caleb had become more important to her than just about anyone else over the last year. And that had seemed fine, before, when they didn’t see each other in person. Because how much could somebody hurt her, or how much could she hurt somebody else, if they didn’t know each other in real life?

And then the fact that they were good friends, that was meant to stop something like this happening. They were meant to skip the flirtation stage, had gone straight into deep devoted friendship. Attraction wasn’t meant to rear its head when they’d already been platonic friends for so long.

Even when they’d realised that that was what was going on, why couldn’t he just ignore it as they had been doing until now? Why drag it out into the open where they had to look at it and be scared of it, forcing her to try and protect herself?

She would have to leave. She could get a taxi to the airport, and...well, even if there wasn’t a flight that day, there had to be one the next. She could sleep on a bench at the airport for a night if she had to. It was no big deal. All she had to do was get herself away from Caleb to a safe distance, where she couldn’t hurt anyone, or get hurt herself.

Caleb steered them alongside the jetty, tied the boat securely and disembarked. He held out his hand to help her do the same. And, oh, but it was inconvenient that it was so much harder to pretend that she was halfway home already when her hand was in his, so present and so very real. And then came the moment when
